Deeper Learning Advocates Push for High-Quality Career and Technical Education Law To meet the demands of an evolving new economy, federal policy must support twenty-first century teaching and learning opportunities.  This includes ensuring that all students receive not only opportunities to develop academic knowledge in the nation’s schools, but also a wider range of skills and competencies that are valued by employers and essential to creating a strong talent pipeline.

Deeper Learning and Mathematics Instruction A new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Ten Questions for Mathematics Teachers… and How PISA Can Help Answer Them, organizes key findings from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 and the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2013 into a set of questions teachers can use to guide their instruction and move students to deeper learning.

A “Softer” Side to Deeper Learning: Building Students’ Social-Emotional Skills The concept of social and emotional learning (SEL) has grown within the education field as a means of preparing students adequately for college and a career. Although the exact definition of SEL varies, SEL generally refers to how students “manage emotions and deal with traumas in order to persist in their academic work.”  SEL is just as important as knowing how to interpret informational text and is a necessary foundation for students to experience deeper learning in the classroom.

New NAEP Test Taps Deeper Learning Competencies NAEP’s newest assessment, the Technology and Engineering Literacy assessment, asks students to think more deeply about technology and engineering challenges by using computer simulations of technology and engineering problem-solving tasks set in a variety of real-world contexts. June 9, 2016
